Training programme on
“Quality Assurance of Dams”


A training programme on “Quality Assurance of Dams” to the middle management level engineers of NTPC was organized during 8th March to 16th March 2004. Five days training programme scheduled from 8th March to 12th March 2004 was conducted at CSMRS and two days training programme on 15th and 16th March 2004 at Tehri dam. A total of 20 NTPC engineers attended the training and benefited by it. The senior officials of NTPC, Shri S.P.Singh, GM(QA&I), Shri Dave, GM(Civil) and Dr.S.N.Mandal, AGM(QA&I) attended the inaugural session.


Training at CSMRS

A total of 20 lectures were delivered during the occasion out of which 9 lectures were delivered by 8 invited speakers from various other organizations and 11 lectures were delivered by 8 CSMRS senior officers. The list of the lectures delivered and the speakers are given below.

Training at Tehri dam site

The trainee officers were taken to the Tehri dam site. A team of CSMRS officers comprising of SRO(S-III), SRO(Gsy), SRO(RF-II) and ARO(S-I) accompanied the trainee officers to Tehri dam site. The officers were taken to the following places.

  • Construction site along dam axis

  • Clay borrow area (Koti borrow area and stock piles

  • Quality control laboratories of soil and concrete.

  • Inspection Gallery

  • Grouting Gallery

  • View point – Cross section and plan of the dam were shown and lay out of various structures were explained.

  • Power house

In addition, the following tests were also demonstrated to the officers at site.

  • Density test on fine filter

  • Density test on clay

Discussions were also held regarding the quality control aspects of the construction materials such as clay core, fine filter, coarse filter, shell and rip rap.
